from claim adjuster to insurance and risk consultant, welcome to the Streamline Risk Consultants blog, where we will talk all things trending in the insurance and risk industry.

The transition from being a claim adjuster to insurance and risk consultant was an easy decision but not one taken lightly. Let’s chat.

The Back Story

August 7, 2022, my husband and I experienced a stillbirth of our child, Jax Lee at 37 weeks. That experience was very devastating and during maternity leave, I was praying for God to bring me back to the light of positivity. After returning back to work, I was doing some research into insurance designations versus obtaining a masters degree within the risk and insurance programs. I found two programs that interested me, Florida State University and Butler University.

Florida State University is a renowned school and known for the Risk Management and Insurance program. Butler University was a newer program and looking to start their 5th cohort. I decided to apply to Butler University for three reasons and I’m being completely honest here, okay, okay! The reasons I decided to apply to Butler University was 1) the website advised of a trip to Bermuda for the capstone course and who doesn’t want to go to Bermuda, right, 2) there was no GRE or GMAT requirement and this was important for me because standardized testing brings me anxiety, and 3) the research into the Lacy School of Business brought much excitement into unlocking unmatched networking opportunities.

May 2023, I embarked on the journey at Butler University to obtain the Master of Science Risk and Insurance (MSRI) and completed the program December 2024. The curriculum was rigorous but insightful, the professors held us accountable but was supportive and provided the tools and time we needed to be successful in the program. My motivation at this point was not my career but to be able to give something to Jax Lee and honor him and that is what I did.

the transition…

Professionally I have gained and learned a lot but my career seemed stagnate and we will get into these story times in another blog, but hold that thought. So I wanted to transition from being a claim adjuster into the risk management sector but it did not seem to be happening. I am aware of my ability to be successful and confident in my capabilities to get the job done, with that I decided to take the leap of faith and open a risk and insurance consulting business.

I believe many times recruiters look at a resume and may determine an individual does not have “direct experience” and aren’t qualified for the position they have applied to. I think this is a huge misconception and Streamline Risk Consultants is here for others who are wanting to transition and bridge the gap.

Let’s think about this a little bit. As a claim adjuster or underwriter, you are able to identify risk all day, everyday because your role as a claim adjuster or underwriter is to observe any inherent risk at the property. For an adjuster, you are on a inspection or reviewing an inspection report and see a tree leaning over the home, this is a risk that causes an inherent danger to the property and any surrounding neighbors property if the tree falls. As an underwriter, you are reviewing an inspection report and have to determine if the property qualifies for the insurance product the business application was submitted for.

The claim adjuster or underwriter may not know about risk registers, risk appetite or how to monitor an enterprise risk management program, but should be provided a chance to transition into the field of risk.

So, nonetheless I am excited to embark on this journey and use my years of experience within the insurance industry, my risk management and insurance knowledge obtained through the Butler program and real-life experience with risk and assist others, whether small businesses, individuals to large corporations, employee training, providing the crash course through the High School Initiative, Streamline Risk Consultants is here to serve the communities and bring awareness to the industry from all point of views.

let’s collaborate.
